What I've Learned

This semester I learned so much information from materials class.  It was great being able to learn from actual experiences, such as field trips and projects rather than sitting through a lecture everyday.
During our first field trip to the Fiber and Biopolymer Research Institute, I was able to see all the different processes of how a fiber is turned into a fabric.  The cotton goes through multiple stages before it is turned into long strands of yarn or dyed.
The next field trip we took was one of my favorites.  All About Looks is a family owned business that deals specifically with fabrics and upholstery.  Anything can be custom made with the fabric of choice or reupholstered onto an old piece of furniture.  They had beautiful fabrics as well as very unique options such as cork or newspaper fabric.
Another field trip we took was to Leftwich Chapman Flooring.  We learned about all different types of flooring and which were most common and the most expensive.  The exotic hardwood was always the most expensive but there were lower cost options such as engineered hardwood.  We also discussed carpet, which is the cheapest option but of course there were high-end carpets that were more soft and plush.  Lastly, we visited the tile section that was more for backsplashes, but had amazing glass tile.
My favorite field trip was to Jeff Seal Homes.  It was great being able to see how many aspects go into building a custom home.  The homes had beautiful details with custom doors, groin vaults, domes and Gothic style windows.  Jeff even tries to incorporate colors and details into his work that coordinate with furniture the owners plan to use in the space.  Overall, the homes were magnificent and unlike anything that is usually seen in Lubbock.
In addition to all the field trips, I also learned a lot about fabric and weaves, color schemes, designing for certain spaces, and how to achieve LEED certification.  Materials are such an important aspect of interior design and there are so many options to choose from that it is necessary to know the specifications of fabrics.
